ARTIST #1: ANDREW TINKER (Denton, TX)

Being a founding member of the Polyphonic Spree was not enough for singer-songwriter, piano-man, and all-around troubadour Andrew Tinker; leaving the group in 2003 to cut his own musical footprint with new backing players. Tinker and company’s soulful contribution “I Don’t Mind” feels steeped in familiar 70’s American Pop, yet never imitates into nostalgia.

ARTIST #2: CRANKSHAFT & THE GEAR GRINDERS (Anoka County, MN)

Rooted in blues, swing, and early rock n’ roll this one-man band has developed his own genre “pork neck”; drawing influences from his boyhood fondness of tape cassettes and the open road. Alex “Crankshaft” Larson twists American roots music in his home state of Minneapolis and throughout the country. His awesomely effervescent track “Neighbor Boys” reminds us why we should have never given up playing the kazoo.

ARTIST #3: THE HANNA BARBARIANS (Fort Worth, TX)

The term “energetic live shows” typically means a band might be great live, so you should give them some leeway on their less-than-fantastic recording. This is not the case with Fort Worth Weekly’s “Rock Band of the YearThe Hanna Barbarians, as they seem to be living in the best of both worlds; making a name with rousing live performances and displaying veteran studio skills with their gritty alt-country compilation contribution “Oh Warden”.

ARTIST #4: DEREK LARSON AND THE LEAVERS (Burleson, TX)

Derek Larson and his gritty Leavers churn out honest pieces of Americana and Folk that leave audiences noiseless with reverence. Derek Larson and The Leavers haunting contribution “Losing Light” fills us with that same veneration, yet at the same time we can’t stop ourselves from singing along.

ARTIST #5: KELSEY SCHNEIDER (Denton, TX)

Originally from Lubbock, Texas singer-songwriter Kelsey Schneider has currently embedded herself into the thriving Denton, Texas music scene, and the results shine on her newest A Different Name EP. A rich cut from that record “You Got Away” toes the delicate line between poignant heartache and candid resolve.

ARTIST #6: SPOOKEASY (Dallas, TX)

Dallas’ indie rock outfit Spookeasy might take their inspiration from 90’s alternative and surf rock, but the sonic result is uniquely their own, mostly in part to vocalist Stephanie Burns idiosyncratic delivery. Their track “Faux Show” cuts its way onto our indie-dance floor with a killer backbeat and dense, reverberating guitars.

ARTIST #7: MY WOODEN LEG (Dallas, TX)

We love this bit from Dallas’ My Wooden Leg’s biography, “Conceived in Romania, born in Chicago, and raised in Fort Worth, My Wooden Leg has the gift to turn a few instruments into a rabid musical feast.” These self-described electronic Gypsy rockers should also add they know how to make a great studio cut, as their track “Jealous Disco” hits on all old and new world cylinders.

ARTIST #8: SID BOWDEN & JOE TURONE (Harlow & Hertfordshire, UK)

Collaborative UK rap-pop duo Sid Bowden and Joe Turone merge acoustic guitars, hip-hop thumps, and sharp vocal hooks to reel the listener in, and their heartfelt delivery keeps us on repeat. “Take the Pain Away” starts with a head-bob and finishes with hands-in-the-air.

ARTIST #9: SWINDLE BOYS (Fort Worth, TX)

Arkansas natives Matthew and Joey Swindle blend their love for Southern gospel and arena bombast to make the most spellbinding of sonic landscapes in their group Swindle Boys. Newly settled in Fort Worth, Texas the two brothers recall the wild majesty of their birthplace in “The Most Natural of States”.

ARTIST #10: ALTERED STATES (Dallas, TX)

Celestial space rockers Altered States might be from Dallas, Texas, but their heads are in another plane when evoking their tasty blend of progressive rock and psychedelic blues. Rumbling bass ebbs to the backbeat flow as “In Between Dreams” builds and releases steam to a wildly satiating effect.

ARTIST #11: JEFFERSON COLBY (Burleson, TX)

Known for their dense album output and psychedelic-meets-punk ethos Burleson, Texas brothers Danno and Matt Mabe crank out high-voltage rock under the moniker Jefferson Colby. The band’s contribution “Roller Coaster Mobile Saloon” has a never-let-you-down attitude as it screeches along the rails at a breakneck pace, shocking its riders with pinpoint rhythmic precision.

ARTIST #12: ENDLESS SKY (Fort Worth, TX)

Minimalist rock two-piece Endless Sky bends at the seams between acoustic emoting and pulsing shuffle steps. “Don’t Let Go” pins the two together with off-the-cuff beats and a cunning sense of plaintive urgency.

ARTIST #13: FONTANELLE (Fort Worth, TX)

Comprised of seasoned veterans Jeff Prince, James Michael Taylor and John Murphy the Americana trio Fontanelle may still be in the early stages of collective gestation, but these polished entertainers have been turning the wheels in Fort Worth, Texas for so long they read salty. Their whimsical DIY cut “Diggin’ a Hole” is so catchy that we dare you not to remember it.

ARTIST #14: GREY SKY SYMPHONY (San Marcos, TX)

Multi-instrumentalist and songwriter Dillon Hutrya is the solitary soul behind the San Marcos, Texas pop act Grey Sky Symphony. His contribution “You’re My Favorite Color” blasts away with percussive horns and buoyant lyrics; keeping it both bright and indelible.
